Jeffries warns admin against arresting Dems: 'Clear lines that they just dare not cross'

House minority leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) stated on Tuesday that any potential actions would represent a significant overreach.

“That’s a red line,” Jeffries remarked to reporters at the Capitol. “They know better than to go down that path.”

Last week, three House Democrats from New Jersey attempted to challenge conditions at immigration detention centers, confronting law enforcement outside the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in Newark, New Jersey. Newark’s Democratic mayor, Ras Baraka, was among them and was arrested for suspected trespassing.

Following Baraka’s arrest, Congress members Bonnie Watson Coleman, Rob Menendez, and Lamonica McQuiber briefly clashed with ICE officials outside the facility. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) alleged that the lawmakers assaulted officers, including female personnel, according to spokesman Tricia McLaughlin’s comments to CNN over the weekend.

Democrats dismissed these claims, asserting that it was the officers who acted aggressively towards them.

Despite this, McLaughlin indicated that more arrests might occur and mentioned that targeting lawmakers “is definitely on the table.”

Jeffries released a statement shortly after the event, defending his colleagues and cautioning the administration against infringing on the legislative branch’s oversight powers as outlined in the Constitution.

On Tuesday, he reiterated his stance, characterizing McLaughlin’s comments as “joking” and urging Democrats not to be intimidated by threats, especially since the president’s approval ratings had dropped significantly.

“We are not daunted by their tactics. The opposition will attempt to force them into submission against their extremism,” Jeffries asserted.

Referring to Trump’s previous post-election standing, he said, “It didn’t happen when Donald Trump was temporarily at a high point right after the election. Do you really think it’s going to happen now, considering he was the least popular president in American history after his first 100 days? Give me a break. No one is afraid of this guy. There’s no one there.”

He further stated, “So there’s a clear line they lack the courage to cross.”
