Jeffries Engages in Tense Exchange with CBS Host Over Election Claims
On Sunday, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries from New York had a brief but revealing exchange with CBS’s Margaret Brennan regarding accusations that President Donald Trump would attempt to “rig” the upcoming midterm elections.
During an appearance on “Face the Nation,” Brennan questioned Jeffries about his earlier assertions that the Democratic Party doesn’t harbor “election deniers,” even as he recently raised concerns about potential “electoral fraud” in the upcoming elections.
Brennan remarked, “Democrats were stunned when President Trump used those words. How do you justify that now? Doesn’t that undermine your confidence in the voters you need to reach?”
Jeffries responded by clarifying his previous remarks: “No, I’ve been using that word in light of Donald Trump’s remarkable efforts to gerrymander Congressional maps in a partisan manner across the nation to rig the midterm elections and rob the American people of their choice regarding who should represent them in the House.”
Brennan interjected, “But Democrats also engage in gerrymandering and redistricting.”
To which Jeffries insisted, “No, no, no. Democrats will actively endeavor to ensure fair maps nationwide, unlike the partisan gerrymandering undertaken by Republicans in various states.” The interview wrapped up soon after this exchange.
Earlier this year, Jeffries had been questioned about his stance on redistricting in Democratic-leaning states, including New York, while criticizing efforts in Republican-controlled states during an interview with CNN’s Dana Bash.
Bash pushed back, asking, “You support the New York State Legislature’s redistricting. Doesn’t it seem hypocritical to criticize Texas when you’re promoting similar things in your own state?” She also noted that Jeffries had opposed changes to New York’s congressional map back in 2022.
Jeffries defended his position by stating, “In New York, the redrawn maps adopted by Congress received bipartisan support. Both Democrats and Republicans endorsed them because they were fair, which isn’t the case in Texas. There, the gerrymandering is racially motivated and partisan, directed by President Trump as part of an effort to rig the midterm elections. We won’t accept that.”
