Jeffries Calls Comey’s Indictment a “Disgraceful Attack”
House minority leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) has criticized the indictment of former FBI director James Comey, labeling it a “disgraceful attack on the rule of law.” He asserts that the Trump administration has abused the criminal justice system for political purposes.
Speaking on Thursday night, Jeffries stated, “The prosecution of James Comey is a dishonorable attack on the rule of law. Donald Trump and his supporters in the Department of Justice are behind this.” He further emphasized that there is no sound legal or factual basis for the charges against Comey, noting, “The department’s conscientious lawyers understand this. Anyone involved in this malicious act will face consequences.”
Comey was indicted by a federal judge on charges of obstructing Congressional inquiries related to his 2020 Senate testimony. He faces the possibility of up to five years in prison.
Trump publicly welcomed the indictment, referring to Comey as “one of the worst people this country has ever seen” in a post on social media.
In response, Comey asserted his innocence and expressed no fear regarding the charges. “My heart is broken for the Department of Justice, but I trust in the federal justice system. I’m innocent, so let’s go to trial,” he said in an Instagram video.
The indictment alleges that Comey misled a Senate committee in 2020 while responding to questions about the investigation into Trump. According to the Department of Justice, Comey falsely claimed he did not permit an FBI agent to serve as an anonymous source.
This development comes shortly after U.S. Attorney Eric Sheebert from the Eastern District of Virginia resigned amid an investigation into New York Attorney General Letitia James and charges related to mortgage fraud. Reports suggest that Sheebert found insufficient evidence to pursue those allegations against James.
Former Trump defense attorney Lindsay Harrigan has been appointed as an interim replacement for Sheebert and has since filed charges against Comey.
