House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries of New York marked the fourth anniversary of the Capitol riot, saying the protesters on January 6 were not “peace-loving people.”
“Thugs who were part of the violent mob on January 6th desecrated the Capitol, hanged the Vice President, assassinated the Speaker of the House, and threatened to hunt down members of Congress,” Jeffries said. stated in a statement Posted in Blue Sky. “They were not peace-loving people.”
Congress will meet on Monday to certify the 2024 election results and hand President-elect Trump the keys to a second term in the White House.
President Trump claimed the Jan. 6 attack was a “day of love” and vowed to pardon those who stormed the Capitol to try to stop the certification of the 2020 election results when he returns to office.
In a statement, Jeffries highlighted the efforts of police officers who responded to the Capitol invasion and protected lawmakers on both sides of the aisle.
More than 140 police officers were injured. One Capitol Police officer died of a stroke the next day after being injured on Jan. 6, and four others died by suicide in the days and months that followed.
Jeffries reflected on the riot in a statement, calling Trump's supporters a “violent mob” who stormed the Capitol to “prevent the peaceful transfer of power.”
“The American people must never forget the events of January 6, 2021, the lives lost, and the heroism of law enforcement,” Jeffries said in a statement. “History will forever remember the attempted rebellion, and we will never allow the violence that unfolded to be glossed over.”
