Jeffries on House Republicans: ‘Wholly owned subsidiaries of Donald Trump’

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries of New York on Sunday accused House Republicans of being “a wholly-owned subsidiary of Donald Trump.”

Jeffries spoke on ABC’s “This Week” about bipartisan Senate negotiations that have been underway since late last year in hopes of reaching an agreement on border security. He told co-host George Stephanopoulos that a potential Senate proposal should not be “killed on arrival” in the House before lawmakers consider documents that have yet to be released. Told.

“How is it possible that the bill is dead on arrival and the extreme MAGA Republicans in the House haven’t even looked at the text? I don’t even know if there is a proposed solution,” Jeffries said.

“At this point, House Republicans are wholly owned by Donald Trump. They are not working to find real solutions for the American people. They are following the orders of the former president.”

For weeks, former President Trump has blasted bipartisan border negotiations, saying additional border legislation is unnecessary. However, many Republicans have stressed that President Trump has no role in border negotiations.

President Trump has also been accused of trying to sink border negotiations to improve his chances in the 2024 election. He later denied his claims, saying he would not oppose “great” legislation that would solve “problems.”

Jeffries is likely referring to House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana), who said last month that any Senate agreement on the border would be “void upon arrival in the House.” “It will be.”

In an interview Sunday, Jeffries continued to accuse House Republicans of following the former president’s lead.

“That’s the height of irresponsibility. That’s what the American people hate about Washington, D.C., at this point,” Jeffries added.
