Jeffries says Democrats will fight GOP efforts to ‘whitewash’ Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol

Jeffries Prepares for Battle on January 6 Narratives

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) stated on Thursday that Democrats are gearing up to counter Republican efforts to downplay the January 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol.

In the coming months, Jeffries mentioned that he will meet with Senator Jamie Raskin (D-Md.), a significant figure on the House Judiciary Committee, as they ponder the best strategy for engaging with the new select committee established by Republicans just this week.

Republicans are attempting to minimize both the violence of January 6 and former President Trump’s involvement, according to Jeffries. He expressed hope that the new Select Committee would challenge these attempts, emphasizing that Democrats will not permit Trump’s allies to reshape the narrative surrounding that fateful day.

“We will actively and forcefully resist any efforts to whitewash what occurred on January 6, when violent mobs stormed the Capitol in an attempt to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election at Trump’s behest,” he told reporters.

The recently approved committee by House Republicans aims to revisit the January 6 events, when hundreds of Trump supporters invaded the Capitol, seeking to disrupt the certification of his election defeat. Thus far, over 1,500 individuals have faced federal charges in connection with the riots, including assaults on law enforcement. Notably, Trump had issued pardons on his first day in office for many of those involved.

This new investigative panel may also look into the activities of the initial January 6 committee, which was formed by Democrats in 2021 under then-Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif) and concluded that Trump played a direct role in inciting the riots.

Republicans have dismissed the previous investigation, labeling it a politically motivated “witch hunt” aimed at damaging Trump. This viewpoint stems from a report released last year by the Republicans on the House Management Committee’s oversight subpanel, chaired by Representative Barry Loudermilk (R-Ga.).

The earlier investigation criticized Capitol leadership for failing to ensure sufficient security during the attack. It even recommended that former Representative Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.), a vocal critic of Trump who was instrumental in the first committee’s proceedings, face charges.

Jeffries is tasked with selecting three Democrats to join the new eight-member committee, chaired by Loudermilk, who asserted that his previous efforts laid a solid foundation. “My prior research yielded impressive results last Congress, but there remains much to accomplish,” he commented, emphasizing the necessity to uncover all facts, bring forth reforms, and ensure such security failures do not recur.

While Jeffries has not indicated when he will finalize his selections, his discussions with Raskin, a former constitutional lawyer and member of the original January 6 committee, suggest that Maryland Democrats could be contenders for the roles.

In light of the new investigation, Raskin remarked that Democrats are prepared to use the platform to underscore Trump’s involvement in the January 6 chaos.

“We welcome the chance for Americans to be reminded of the ongoing complicity of Republicans in violent attacks against Congress and Vice President Mike Pence, along with President Trump’s unsettling attempts,” he emphasized.
