Ostapenko and Townsend’s Heated Exchange at US Open

Jenna Ostapenko has shared her side of the story following a tense encounter with Taylor Townsend after their second-round match at the US Open on Wednesday.

The 28-year-old Ostapenko expressed frustration over two specific actions from Townsend, 29, after losing the match 7-5, 6-1. During their handshake, Townsend mentioned that Ostapenko accused her of having “no class” and remarked, “see what happens when she goes outside the US without education.”

In a series of Instagram stories addressing the incident, Ostapenko claimed that Townsend disregarded “the rules of tennis” during their interaction at the net and while warming up. She expressed, “Today, after the match, I told her that she had netball at a critical moment and didn’t apologize, which felt rude. Her response was that she didn’t need to say sorry at all.” Ostapenko emphasized that “there are certain rules in tennis that most players adhere to,” stating it was the first time she encountered such behavior on tour.

Ostapenko also pointed out that players typically warm up from the baseline, but Townsend entered the court abruptly to begin their warm-up.

Townsend countered Ostapenko’s claims during a post-match press conference. She stated she didn’t think an apology was necessary but was taken aback by Ostapenko’s expectation for one. “If you are waiting for someone to apologize and feel upset when they don’t, that’s on you, not on me,” she remarked.

Later, Ostapenko responded to accusations of being racist, asserting that race played no role in the situation. “I’ve never been a racist in my life. I respect every nation. Where I’m from doesn’t matter to me,” she insisted. She reiterated that tennis has its rules and felt that the crowd’s energy shouldn’t be used to disrespect others.

When questioned about any potential racial implications of the comments, Townsend stated she “didn’t consider that” but recognized sensitivities surrounding issues within their community.

Ostapenko has been in the spotlight before due to her unpredictable behavior, including incidents from last year’s Qatar Open.
