Jelly Roll admits he’s gotten staph infections from ‘bad tattoos’: ‘I learned nothing’

Jelly Roll has made some questionable decisions.

The rising star in country music is covered in tattoos, including on his face and neck. Howard SternJelly Roll has admitted that some of his tattoos were done in extremely unsanitary conditions, causing him to develop staph infections.

He told Stern that when he was younger he tried to get a face tattoo but was turned down by an artist, and it was only after he had his face tattooed while in prison that another artist agreed to tattoo him in the area.

Stern pointed out that getting a tattoo while in prison must be unhygienic, and Jelly Roll quickly agreed.

“I once got a staph infection from a bad tattoo,” he says. “I didn’t learn anything. I’m stubborn. And I went back to the same guy who gave me the staph infection!”

“It’s crazy what you’re trying to do,” he added. “It’s next level crazy.”

The conversation began with Stern referencing an interview Jelly Roll did with GQ earlier this year, in which he said, “I regret 98 percent of my tattoos — 97 of them — pretty much all of them. There were like core philosophies that were ingrained in my life when I was 17, and now I’m 40 and I’m like, ‘What the hell was I thinking?'”

“I hate them all,” he said.

When Stern asked him if he regretted his face tattoo, he said, “It’s probably one of the few tattoos I want to keep. I love crosses and slashes. This one…” and held up his arms.

He shifted the conversation a little and shared a wisdom he says nobody ever told him: “I’ll pay $300 for a pair of shoes that I’ll ruin in six months or lose, but if someone wants to charge me $400 an hour to tattoo, I’m done. I’m not gonna pay $1,000 an hour.”

The “Son of a Sinner” singer added: “I have a tattoo on my arm that says I gave somebody a quarter bag of bad marijuana. It looks like a tattoo of a quarter bag of bad marijuana.”

He said the tattoos on his arms look “decent” because they are so numerous and densely packed, but if someone looked closely they could see “this is awful.”
