Jelly Roll Talks About His Faith and Jesus’ Impact
In a recent podcast, country singer Jelly Roll expressed his enthusiasm for the rising popularity of Jesus in today’s society, emphasizing that the church should focus on love rather than judgment.
He described himself as “an unlikely ambassador for Christianity,” but believes his life story resonates with many, partly due to its complexities. Jelly Roll, whose real name is Jason Deford, has a history marked by multiple arrests and prison time, particularly related to drug charges. He received a pardon from Tennessee Governor Bill Lee last December.
Last year, he celebrated significant recognition in the industry, winning three Dove Awards, including the coveted Song of the Year for his collaboration with Brandon Lake on “Hard Fight Hallelujah.” He shared his thoughts on modern Christianity, stating, “I love where modern Christianity is going right now,” adding that love and empathy are returning to the forefront. He pointed out that, rather than preaching loudly, Christians are showing their faith through acts of kindness and service.
Jelly Roll highlighted that a large portion of charitable giving in the world comes from Christians and he feels proud to discuss Jesus in a “cool” way.
He also reflected on personal growth, mentioning that he is revisiting the Bible and considering changes in his life. “If Jesus really wants me to stop swearing, I’m going back to the Bible now,” he noted, emphasizing his commitment to his faith journey.
At the Dove Awards, he recalled how his understanding of faith was shaped by caring individuals who introduced him to Jesus. He reflected on a passage from Matthew, where Jesus speaks about serving others, realizing he stands where he is because people invested their time in simple acts of kindness. “The world is hearing about Jesus right now in a way it hasn’t been in decades,” he concluded.
