Jen Psaki says Biden should go on ‘The View’ rather than hold press conferences

Former White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki on Monday defended President Biden’s erratic press conferences and infrequent interviews, saying it was more convenient for the commander-in-chief to appear on “The View” than interact with political reporters. He argued that it was a better idea.

“The beauty of the current media environment, although there are many challenges, and I want to start on the optimistic side, is that there are so many options,” Psaki said in an appearance on ABC News’ Gabfest. He spoke on the occasion.

“Respect for free speech and freedom of the press is important when you communicate from the White House, but at the same time you’re just trying to communicate seriously with the American people, right? So, in my opinion, he’s going to hold a press conference. “I should be on ‘The View’ before,” she continued.

Biden, 81, has held the fewest official conferences or press conferences of any modern president.

According to a tally kept by Martha Joynt Kumar, director of the White House Transition Project, Biden has given just 89 interviews in total during his first three years in office and has never held a solo press conference at the White House. I’ve only been there three times. I counted.

By comparison, former President Donald Trump gave 300 interviews and held 54 press conferences in his third year in office.

“I think the press conference is important, but I also think he’s doing Howard Stern. That was an interview that reached a wider audience,” Psaki said last month, referring to Biden’s lovefest with the former shock jock. he said.

Psaki, who currently hosts MSNBC, also praised Biden’s appearance on the podcast “Smartless,” hosted by actors Will Arnett, Jason Bateman and Sean Hayes.

The president’s interview on “Smartless” was recorded on March 28, when he was in Manhattan for a fundraiser at Radio City Music Hall, and last week, a full month after it was recorded. It was not published.

“In my opinion, he should be on ‘The View’ before he does his press conference,” Psaki said Monday. ABC

“If you’re in the White House, you’re not thinking about whether I’m going to get the most interviews, right? You’re thinking, am I doing my best to get the message across to the American people? This is the person I represent,” Psaki said.

“So I would like to see more Howard Stern, come on ‘The View,’ have more ‘smartless’ conversations, where we have conversations about policy, but it’s more about people being in the kitchen.” It’s a real conversation we’re having,” she added. .

Psaki appeared on the show Tuesday to promote her book, “Say More: Lessons from Work, the White House, and the World,” published by Simon & Schuster.

According to the publisher, “refreshingly candid and clear-headed,” Psaki “shares the surprising lessons he’s learned on his path to success and… [offer] Unique yet universal advice on how to communicate more effectively in any situation. ”
