Jennifer Lawrence Discusses Postnatal Struggles and New Film
Jennifer Lawrence opened up about the “very isolated” feelings she experienced after becoming a mother, while discussing her new film that delves into complex emotional themes. The film, directed by Scottish filmmaker Lyn Ramsay, is titled “Die, My Love,” and features Lawrence’s character caring for her newborn in a rundown house deep in the forests of Montana.
“As a mother, it was really hard to separate what I do from what she does,” Lawrence noted during a press conference ahead of the film’s premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. “And that was just heartbreaking,” she added, reflecting on her experiences.
The “Hunger Games” star welcomed her first child in 2022 and was expecting her second when filming commenced in 2024. She remarked, “It’s not like postpartum… it’s very isolated.”
“Die, My Love” is adapted from a novel by Argentine writer Ariana Hurwitz and represents Ramsay’s second exploration into the darker aspects of motherhood, following her critically acclaimed film “We Need to Talk About Kevin,” which was released in 2011.
Robert Pattinson, known for his role in “Batman,” mentioned how he often gravitates towards sharper characters. However, in this film, he faces the emotional challenges of supporting a partner dealing with mental health issues. He expressed, “We’re trying to deal with her isolation, especially after giving birth, and trying to make sense of your role in this situation. It’s really tough.” Pattinson highlighted the struggle of not having the expertise to help, yet wishing to restore the dynamic of the relationship.
Interestingly, Lawrence shared that her child has somehow enhanced her acting skills. “I didn’t know I could feel that much,” she confessed. “My work relies heavily on emotions… and those emotions have transformed my creativity. I would actually recommend having a child if you’re looking to deepen your work as an actor.”
