Scott Jennings, a conservative commentator for CNN, criticized California Governor Gavin Newsom for allegedly exploiting the civil unrest in Los Angeles to bolster his political aspirations for the presidency.
Jennings expressed disbelief, stating, “This guy is the governor of the state, and it – he got one of the most important cities burning on his watch.”
He remarked that Newsom seemed to “control the failed state” and commented on his position as a leading member of a political party aiming to address the illegal activities contributing to the current situation.
In a passionate address on Tuesday, Newsom called out President Trump for deploying the National Guard in Los Angeles, accusing him of “abusing brave power.”
The recent protests in Los Angeles were ignited by assaults on immigrants, which Democrats and immigration advocates claimed were targeting innocent individuals.
During the same segment, Jennings, who is closely aligned with Trump, defended the enforcement of federal immigration laws, stating, “It’s not particularly controversial for Donald Trump to enforce federal laws.”
He continued, “For Democrats and Gavin Newsom, enforcing federal law is a humiliation for them.”
Notably, Trump is the first president in over half a century to send the National Guard to California without the governor’s approval, and it’s uncommon for a president to deploy active-duty troops domestically. Hundreds of Marines have been mobilized in Los Angeles.
A judge recently dismissed Newsom’s urgent appeal to limit the troop deployment ordered by Trump.
In a televised address that same evening, Newsom warned that Trump’s actions would have broader implications beyond California. He stated, “This is about all of us. This is about you. California may be the first, but obviously it won’t end here. Other states are next. Democracy is next. Democracy is attacked right in front of our eyes.”
