Nvidia’s co-founder and CEO, Jensen Huang, has proclaimed that we have entered the era of artificial general intelligence (AGI) following the release of OpenAI’s latest model.
On Thursday, OpenAI introduced the GPT-6 Astra model, highlighting significant advancements in its applications for computing, coding, scientific inquiry, and various professional tasks.
Astra is initially being made available to OpenAI’s enterprise customers who have Daybreak access, and it will also be introduced to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise users, as well as being accessible through the OpenAI API and Amazon Web Services.
In a post on X, Huang congratulated OpenAI on this achievement, asserting that it signifies the beginning of the AGI era.
Huang stated, “GPT-6 Astra, trained on ~100K+ NVIDIA Grace Blackwell NVLink72. From ChatGPT to o1 to Astra in 4 years. AGI has arrived. Congratulations @OpenAI team. 400K GPUs coming online next.”
While there isn’t a universal definition of AGI in the tech industry, it is broadly seen as an AI system that exhibits human-like cognitive skills for learning, reasoning, and adapting new skills without retraining.
OpenAI defines AGI as “highly autonomous systems that outperform humans at most economically valuable work.”
Huang and Nvidia characterize AGI as an AI capable of passing professional certification exams and standardized tests with top-tier scores in various fields.
Prior to the release of Astra, OpenAI President Greg Brockman mentioned that this model marks a pivotal moment in the quest for AGI, suggesting, “I think it’s not unreasonable to feel that we are now in the AGI era.”
According to the company, Astra can handle repetitive computer tasks such as filling out online forms, updating customer information, organizing schedules, and conducting research.
OpenAI also noted that Astra is proficient in generating documents, spreadsheets, and presentations, claiming it to be the “best model for software engineering to date” and emphasizing its strengths in cybersecurity.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman shared that one of the most impressive features of Astra is its ability to identify issues that users might not have considered. He elaborated, “Not only could it excel at doing a bunch of research about, you know, a complex supply chain for chips that we’re trying to produce, but parts of that task that I didn’t ask it for, it can come back and say, ‘You didn’t think to ask me about this other part of the supply chain.'”
