Jeremy Renner said he “didn’t have the stamina” when he returned to filming “The Mayor of Kingstown” in January, a year after he was nearly killed when he was hit by a snowplow, and was “amazed” that he was able to do his own stunts.
The “Avengers” actor told Los Angeles-based radio host Ellen K on Friday that “everything” still hurts, specifically noting that “all of my joints … I think it’s just more discomfort.”
He explained that when he first returned to the Paramount+ drama, he had to cut back on his hours, which typically consisted of 14-hour days.
“I don’t think 14-hour days are good for anybody,” he said of the fewer hours child actors had to spend on set to start with, “and I think the crew all agreed with that because I would fall asleep during the day, I would get sleepy during filming, and I would be really tired at the end of the day. I just didn’t have the stamina.”

He later said: “I turned things around, came out even stronger and finished the season well.”
On January 1, 2023, the actor was “totally crushed” by a 14,000-pound Pistenbury Snowcat near his Nevada home while attempting to tow a car that was stuck in snow after a major storm.
The 53-year-old spent several weeks in hospital, underwent several operations and has undergone intensive physiotherapy over the past year.

Renner told People magazine this week that he “wasn’t feeling very well” when he returned for season three.
“I think at first, I didn’t have a chance to talk to anybody because I hadn’t met anybody, and these were people I’d worked with for two seasons already,” Renner told the magazine about the show’s staff. “They didn’t know what Jeremy was coming back to. And I was not in a good mood, to be honest with you. I really wasn’t.”
Renner suffered 30 fractures, blunt chest trauma and orthopedic injuries as a result of the accident.
He added to People magazine that the accident means he’ll have to make some adjustments to his life: “I’m never going to be able to lead a completely normal life like I did before the accident. And I’m OK with that. I accept it,” he said.

Renner told Ellen K that he was really struggling on set at first, but was forced to halt production because he thought about his crew and “a lot of people need their jobs.”
“This is the only game in Pittsburgh,” he added.

“I didn’t think I’d be able to do martial arts acting,” he admitted. While filming the first episode of season three, Renner said, “I told my stuntman, ‘I can’t do this.’ And then the day came. [I] I put on my tennis shoes and thought, ‘Okay, let’s give this a go,’ and it worked.”
He added, “No stuntmen were needed and I was very, very happy that we were able to do it and that I got to act it myself.”
In a trailer for the new season, Renner said he was “amazed” that he was able to choreograph the fight scenes.

“The stunt work was pretty violent and the fact that I was even able to attempt it was a surprise. I wasn’t sure if I could do it.”
He said he was surprised he “wasn’t hurt” after filming the first episode, and joked about Hugh Dillon, who plays Ian on the show, that he “may have hurt Hugh’s feelings.”
“It’s been a joy to be a part of seeing Jeremy go from where he was to where he is now and watching him perform,” Dillon, who also serves as executive producer, says in the trailer. “Jeremy Renner does his own stunts, which makes it worth seeing for that alone.”
