Jericho girls varsity basketball aims to continue their remarkable playoff journey

The story of the Jericho women’s basketball team has a fairy tale vibe to it.

Coming off one of their best seasons, the North Shore program has transformed into an underdog. Coach Andy Schneider noted that, after advancing to the quarterfinals, the Jayhawks are eager for one last playoff victory to keep the momentum going.

“Making the playoffs means a lot for Jericho,” he shared following a 46-36 victory against Mepham in their season opener.

“This is only the third time in history that we’ve reached the playoffs.”

With a record of 15-6, the team is embracing the possibility of what they can achieve this season. Schneider expressed that they all “want to feel that happiness and joy” associated with success.

This season has brought surprises, ones that have not only exceeded expectations but have also reshaped our views on competitors.

Birds of Prey

“We used to be the team that others played on senior night… essentially, we were the easy win,” Schneider reflected, having coached the Jayhawks for 12 years.

“That’s not going to be the case anymore.”

The team’s playoff journey marks their best since 2018, and a significant reason for this is the leadership of players like captain Sadie Crangle, who has been on varsity since middle school.

“We’ve developed together, and our practices have really fostered our growth as a team,” said the senior, who is set to score her 1,300th career point soon.

Crangle has matured into a reliable point guard, both in her play and as a leader.

“When she was younger, I had to push her to shoot more,” Schneider noted.

“Now, she elevates everyone’s game.”

Her contributions are critical to the Jayhawks’ long-range shooting strategy, which has led to an impressive average of 21 points per game from beyond the arc, often closing games with 3-pointers.

“Everyone feels that pressure from us on the outside,” said sophomore Angela Tan, who is in her second season on varsity.

“That’s what makes us a unique and challenging team to defend.”

Tan is looking to carry on Crangle’s legacy, stating that the upperclassmen have been pivotal in helping her thrive.

“I respect my teammates, but it feels more like we’re on equal ground thanks to them,” she added, mentioning how they help her stay composed and positive.

Schneider is clearly invested in this special season, humorously noting, “Even if it gets a bit intense, I won’t hold back with the refs.”

“I’ve kept my cool this year,” he joked.

Fight or Flight

This season has reached a significant point, as the Jayhawks hosted their first home playoff game—something they’ve never accomplished before.

“We’ve never even won a home playoff game,” Schneider admitted.

This matchup also marked a rematch against Mepham, a team that outscored Jericho 68-41 in last year’s playoffs.

“Winning at home was really special,” Crangle said, appreciating the packed stands and vibrant atmosphere.

Now, the Jayhawks face a formidable opponent: the undefeated MacArthur Generals.

“It’s going to require a tremendous effort,” Schneider stated, recalling their two previous losses to the Generals this season.

But the Jayhawks are determined to prolong their fairy tale.

“Our upcoming practices are crucial,” Crangle emphasized.

“If we can take what we learn and apply it in games, executing our strategies effectively… it would be amazing to win.”
