Jermod McCoy drastically changed his 2026 NFL Draft appearance in one impressive moment

Jermod McCoy’s Comeback in 4.38 Seconds

It’s amazing how much can change in just over four seconds.

Fans hadn’t seen Jermod McCoy on the field for quite some time. In fact, it’s been over a year since the standout cornerback from Tennessee suffered a torn ACL, which kept him off the field for the entire 2025 season.

Despite receiving a clean bill of health midway through the season, McCoy opted not to return and skipped the NFL Combine in February, citing a need for more preparation. This only added to the uncertainty surrounding his future in the league.

But on March 31, he made a comeback, ready to showcase his skills in the highly anticipated 40-yard dash during Tennessee’s pro day, an event that might significantly impact his draft position.

In a mere 4.38 seconds, McCoy made a statement as he heads into the NFL Draft.

Tennessee coach Josh Heupel commented, “He looked just like Germod out there. It was wonderful to see him back at 100 percent.” For a 20-year-old poised to be a standout cornerback, the possibilities on draft day seem endless.

ESPN draft analyst Matt Miller suggests that McCoy could be picked as high as No. 6 by Cleveland, while he doesn’t anticipate he’ll fall below No. 20, which is where the Cowboys hold one of their two first-round picks.

Miller noted, “[The] 4.38 shows his explosive speed, alongside a 38-inch vertical jump and 10-foot, 7-inch broad jump. He did everything right, practicing and positioning. This was a pivotal moment for him after sitting out the Combine.” He added that this event serves as a reminder of McCoy’s status as a top corner in this year’s draft, and he could’ve also excelled last year had he been eligible.

While the ACL injury posed a concern for some teams, there’s a buzz around McCoy that may benefit him. Late momentum can often be more favorable than early hype, especially as the draft approaches.

“The injury timeline might concern some teams, but I’d say Dallas is the leading candidate,” Miller stated. “If they pass on him, it’s surprising. They have some of the best medical professionals, including knee specialists.” He mentioned various teams that might take McCoy, remarking that it could be exciting for him to step in for a former All-Pro player.

If the Chiefs select McCoy, he would find himself in familiar territory as he’d get to follow in the footsteps of Patrick Mahomes—a player he admired while growing up.

Interestingly, McCoy has a connection with Mahomes, having been coached in baseball by his father, former Mets pitcher Pat Mahomes. They even share a past as McCoy was once in a class with Mahomes’ aunt when they were kids.

McCoy had success as a long jumper and triple jumper in high school, making his mark as a wide receiver. However, he transitioned to cornerback in college, where his skills flourished.

After a standout season at Oregon State, McCoy continued to elevate his game at Tennessee, earning second-team All-American honors in 2024, with four interceptions and nine pass breakups, competing against LSU’s Mansour Delane.

Now, after running that 4.38-second dash, his potential is shining again.

“I feel fantastic,” McCoy shared during a draft meeting. “I had a significant impact the last year I played. I believe my playmaking abilities set me apart, and that’s exactly what I intend to keep doing.”
