Cowboys Owner Discusses Micah Parsons Trade

On Thursday, Jerry Jones, the owner of the Dallas Cowboys, faced the media to discuss the surprising trade involving Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers. A key question circulating was, why make such a trade?

“This gives us the opportunity to be a better team than we have in years,” Jones expressed, sitting alongside his son, Stephen, who is the CEO and director of player personnel.

Jones believes that this move not only benefits the current season but sets the team up for future success as well. He highlighted the acquisition of Pro Bowl defensive tackle Kenny Clark, indicating a strategic push to bolster their defensive line.

“We’ve got Pro Bowl players on our defense, particularly in areas where we’ve had major concerns,” he pointed out. “We need to stop the run—which has been an issue for us for years.”

With Parsons’ agent mired in contract talks, Jones wasn’t shy about sharing his frustrations. He mentioned that discussions about Parsons’ trade had been ongoing since the spring and he had even made a significant offer back in April. Supposedly, he doubled the highest non-quarterback contract in NFL history, aiming for more security for both the player and the team.

While reflecting on the trade, Jones noted, “It’s a big commitment—not just about his first four years.” The Cowboys are also set to receive first-round picks from the Packers in 2026 and 2027. Moreover, Jones left the door open for further trades involving established players.

“We’re not just getting players now but those draft picks can lead us to top-tier players,” he elaborated. “It’s all about making sure we have what we need when it counts.” Although, he was careful not to make promises about who they might draft or acquire.

The decision to trade Parsons was a collective one, agreed upon by both the front office and coaching staff. Interestingly, Clark had already been practicing with the Packers but it seems things accelerated rapidly as news broke about the trade.

Jones was later asked about a report claiming Parsons reacted with “sympathy” upon hearing trade news and felt he was put in a tough spot. “It wasn’t an order or anything like that,” Jones clarified, addressing those comments directly.

As the Cowboys aim for a fresh start, they are focused on winning right out of the gate—with the Philadelphia Eagles first on the schedule.

Lastly, Jones made sure to express his appreciation for Parsons’ contributions over the years. “We’re grateful for what he’s done and wish him well,” he shared. In closing, he emphasized that contracts need mutual agreement to work, implying that they had done everything possible to keep Parsons before heading down this path.
