Jerry Jones does two-word backtrack after CeeDee Lamb ‘urgency’ comments

Jerry Jones is walking back comments he made last week about the urgency (or lack thereof) of reaching a deal with star receiver CeeDee Lamb.

Ahead of the preseason game between the Cowboys and the Los Angeles Rams, Jones appeared on the team’s pregame show. He then addressed the comments that caused a stir a few days ago.

Lam is looking to negotiate a new contract ahead of this season but the two sides appear to be at an impasse at the moment.

“There’s no urgency to end it,” Jones told reporters last week.

But on Sunday, after Jones received backlash, he tried to clear the air.

“Nobody appreciates having Sheedy on the field more than I do,” Jones said in an interview.

Lamb also explained that he did not play in Sunday’s preseason game, which was part of the reason for his comments.

“Now, I completely understand the anxiety that comes with when someone says they miss you. Well, Sheedy, I know we miss you,” Jones continued, “but we’re not going to miss you when we’re out here competing and that doesn’t put any pressure on us.”

Lam was quick to respond to this initial comment, taking to social media to quickly quote the reporter from X’s post, writing, “LOL.”

Lamb removed references to the Cowboys from his social media profiles, and Micah Parsons reposted his response to Jones.

Sunday’s comments appeared to be an attempt by Jones to ease some of the hurt from his earlier comments, while remaining adamant that he doesn’t feel any real urgency about getting a deal done.

“But I will say, if he was here, he wouldn’t be here taking snaps today. You have to use your head when you play your key players,” Jones said. “That gives other young players an opportunity. We know what Sheedy can do, and he’s worked with Dak, so we’re not going to have him here. It has nothing to do with his contract. … Bottom line, there’s just not that much urgency.”

Lamb and the Cowboys have been discussing a contract extension that would make him the highest-paid wide receiver in the NFL.

He led the NFL this season with 135 catches for 1,749 yards and 12 touchdowns.
