Jerry Jones Defends Micah Parsons Trade

Jerry Jones has no second thoughts about the decision to trade Micah Parsons. It’s been almost a year since the Cowboys made this pivotal trade with the Packers, and Jones emphasizes that he’s pleased with how things have turned out.

“Micah has incredible talent, and sure, everyone wants a player like that. But, honestly, I’m here now, and I like the results of this trade,” Jones remarked, echoing sentiments shared in a recent ESPN report.

He even drew a parallel with the famous Herschel Walker trade to the Vikings, which he believes ultimately helped build the Cowboys’ dynasty back in the 1990s. “People might argue that those picks from the Walker trade helped us secure key players, but the real takeaway is that those extra picks made me more daring—let’s say, more inclined to take risks,” he stated.

Jones explained that this boldness in acquiring draft picks, following the trade, allowed the Cowboys to negotiate a deal that ultimately justified signing Parsons.

In his words, “It’s like heading to Las Vegas with some extra cash in your wallet, even when you’ve got expenses for the baby. You might never roll the dice with more confidence than when you’re playing with your baby’s money.”

This mindset, as he described, helped reshape the Cowboys’ defense and led to pivotal decisions that have put the team in its current position.

Dallas traded Parsons for defensive tackle Kenny Clark and first-round picks in 2026 and 2027. The Cowboys utilized one of those picks to acquire Quinnen Williams from the Jets last season. Moreover, they selected Malachi Lawrence with the Packers’ 2026 pick, chosen at No. 23 in this year’s draft.

Additionally, parting with Parsons opened up cap space, enabling the team to secure safety Jalen Thompson and trade for Rashan Gary, as well as sign Williams to a hefty three-year, $105.9 million extension.
