Jerry Jones Reacts to Micah Parsons’ Trade Request
On Saturday, Jerry Jones addressed the media for the first time following Micah Parsons’ unexpected trade request. He seemed quite relaxed, saying, “Please don’t let our fans lose sleep from this. We’re in good condition. This is negotiation.”
The situation escalated after Parsons released a detailed statement on Friday, expressing his desire for a trade. He noted that Jones hadn’t included his agent in the discussions and, importantly, mentioned that he wasn’t contemplating any changes that would affect the protection of star players.
Jones suggested that there had been some dialogue with Parsons back in March, though it didn’t seem to involve the player’s representative. He indicated uncertainty about whether this negotiation was ever solidified into a formal agreement.
It’s unusual for a contract dispute to be so public, which complicates any potential resolution. Parsons has recounted that he and Jones previously discussed leadership, which, somehow, morphed into a conversation about a contract extension. He thought his agent would jump in formally, but it seems that wasn’t the expectation from the Cowboys’ side. They apparently believed they had a direct agreement with Parsons without the agents getting involved.
Parsons stated, “When my agent reached out and spoke to Adam Prafiska, the Cowboys’ director of salary cap and player contracts…” He added that his agent also contacted Stephen Jones. Afterward, the organization seemingly chose to go quiet again.
He lamented, “At that point, we decided to let the team reach out to us whenever they want to talk. But frankly, there hasn’t been any call, email, or text to my agent about opening negotiations yet.”
As of now, the Cowboys maintain Parsons’ rights through franchise tags until 2028. However, it’s worth noting this is the final season of his rookie deal. While Parsons is at training camp, he seems to have moved past any hold-in tactics. He participated in his first practice, citing some back tension, though he’s been attending meetings and remaining active with exercises and practices.
