Jerry Rice Engages with Fans at American Century Championship

During the American Century Championship at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course on Thursday, NFL Hall of Famer Jerry Rice didn’t shy away from the crowd’s laughter and jeers. The San Francisco 49ers icon was competing alongside other sports celebrities like Aaron Rodgers, Charles Barkley, and Tony Romo.

At 63 years old, Rice wrapped up the tournament in 42nd place out of 90 participants.

Just after hitting his tee shot, a heckler in the crowd shouted “Fore!” in a mocking tone. Rice responded, “Hey! Yo! Hey! Hey!” and, before anyone could even really process it, he ducked under the ropes with his golf club and headed towards the spectators.

“Which one? Which one?!” he shouted as he moved closer to the audience. Even his golf spikes couldn’t stop him; his signature speed, from his days as a top wide receiver, was still evident.

A fan nearby yelled out, “Green and blue!” in response to the supposed provocateur, which seemed to diminish the intensity of the moment. After some back and forth, he ultimately regrouped, returning to the tee amid applause from the crowd.

This isn’t the first instance of Rice losing his cool at this event. Last year, he got particularly agitated with reporters after feeling a question about the Kansas City Chiefs was a slight against his beloved 49ers.

As one fan aptly put it on Thursday, “Don’t poke the bear!”
