Cause of Death Revealed for Former US Lawyer Jessica Aber
On Monday, authorities disclosed the cause of death for Jessica Aber, a former US lawyer, who passed away unexpectedly at her home in March. According to the medical examiner’s office in Alexandria, Virginia, Aber died from a “sudden, unexpected death from epilepsy.” Earlier in the year, police had indicated they found no evidence suggesting anything other than natural causes led to her passing.
Aber’s family had shared with the media shortly after her death that she had been dealing with epilepsy-related seizures for several years.
At 43 years old, Aber resigned on January 20, after serving as a US lawyer for the Eastern District of Virginia from 2021 to 2025. This resignation coincided with Donald Trump’s return to the White House.
In her resignation letter, Aber expressed that she viewed her role as “an immeasurable honor.” She showed gratitude towards officials such as Senator Mark Warner, Senator Tim Kaine, and President Biden, as well as Attorney General Garland. “I’m proud of the work I’ve done with federal, state, and local law enforcement to enforce the law and build community trust,” she noted.
During her time in office, Aber handled several significant cases, including those involving leaks from the CIA and cases against Russian citizens accused of fraud in the United States. Just prior to her resignation, she achieved a noteworthy legal victory when former CIA analyst Asif Rahman pleaded guilty to leaking confidential documents concerning Israeli military strategies.
Aber critiqued Rahman’s actions, calling them a breach of his oath and the law, which “risked his life and compromised US diplomatic relationships” while undermining the ability to gather crucial intelligence going forward.
In recognition of her efforts, Aber received the Exceptional Service Award from the Justice Department in 2019.
