Jessica Tisch expresses regret for her brother's comments regarding Zohran Mamdani

NYC Mayor-elect Zoran Mamdani Addresses Controversy over NYPD Commissioner’s Brother’s Remarks

New York City’s upcoming mayor, Zoran Mamdani, shared on Thursday that NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch has directly apologized to her team. This came after her brother called Mamdani an “enemy” of the Jewish community during a notable charity event in Manhattan on Wednesday night.

During a Cocoa Chat community meeting, Mamdani emphasized that the apology has been accepted and stated his intention to govern inclusively for all New Yorkers. “The Secretary apologized to my team for that comment. I look forward to being the mayor for every New Yorker, including Jewish New Yorkers,” he remarked.

Mamdani reassured that this incident won’t disrupt his professional ties with Tisch, who has opted to stay as police chief despite any policy differences they may have.

“My focus in my conversations with Secretary Tisch is to provide public safety for New Yorkers in the five boroughs and to do that in tandem with justice,” he said. “The apology was conveyed to the team. I appreciated that and I’m focused on generating results.”

According to NYPD spokesman Brad Weeks, the Commissioner understands the concerns of the Jewish community and believes Mamdani will fulfill his commitment to serve all New Yorkers.

The controversy stems from remarks made by Benjamin Tisch, the billionaire CEO of Lowe’s Corp., at the Metropolitan Council’s annual gala, where he labeled Mamdani an “enemy” of the Jewish people. Witnesses described the atmosphere as tense at the event, especially since Tisch had recently agreed to continue as the head of the NYPD under Mamdani’s incoming administration. One attendee expressed that the room fell silent, reflecting the shock at such harsh words.

Interestingly, Mamdani, a democratic socialist, has been a strong critic of Israel but has denied any anti-Semitic intentions in his views. Notably, extensive members of the Tisch family have contributed over $1 million to a super PAC that opposed Mamdani during the 2025 mayoral race, while Commissioner Tisch did not make any contributions.

In addressing the differences between him and Tisch, Mamdani previously stated that they both acknowledge varying opinions on certain matters but believe these differences could ultimately strengthen their partnership moving forward.

The tension arose just a few weeks ahead of Mamdani’s inauguration, scheduled for January 1. Requests for comments from both Mamdani’s representatives and Benjamin Tisch went unanswered.
