Football Season and Faith
With the arrival of college football season, there’s a noticeable surge in athletes turning to their faith. It’s probably because stepping onto the field or court comes with so many uncertainties. Even high school and college athletes feel immense pressure. Perhaps in those moments, they look to God for strength and humility, remembering that their struggles often pale in comparison to other challenges they face.
During the kickoff weekend, several athletes made it clear that their beliefs matter. Tim Tebow, the former Florida Gators quarterback, delivered a heartfelt prayer before a game against Syracuse. He reflected on the love of Christ, stating, “Good and elegant heavenly Father, we love you today because you loved us first…” He expressed gratitude for the chance to rely on divine support.
Tebow continued, emphasizing the importance of faith and love, thanking God for grace, and hoping others might embrace this faith too.
LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier celebrated a victory over Clemson, lauding “Lord and Savior Jesus Christ” during his post-game remarks. “Look at how good God is,” he said. “We’ve been working hard for the past six months and I’m proud of my team.”
Before the game’s outstanding performance against UNC, TCU quarterback Josh Hoover donned a “Jesus Won” t-shirt. Despite his team’s defeat against Ohio State, Texas Longhorns defensive back Michael Tuff spoke about the comfort of faith after a tough loss. He reminded teammates that God’s victory is already secured, emphasizing that life is temporary and the struggles they’re facing aren’t the end.
Tuff concluded, “After the game, even in a loss, he’s still free to pursue his dreams.” It’s a reminder that faith can provide solace, regardless of the scoreboard.
