Little League Coach Delivers Memorable Speech on the Mound
This past Wednesday, during a Little League World Series game, an unforgettable moment unfolded. The matchup featured Arizona and Hawaii in the Western Regional Tournament, with Arizona ahead 2-1 in the top of the fourth inning. At that pivotal moment, manager Drew Breifogel made a visit to his pitcher.
Breifogel began with a simple question, “This is a baseball game, right?” Little League teams from around the globe aim for the championship title each year, and the pressure can really weigh on young players, who are usually between the ages of 10 and 13.
Camden Bourke, the pitcher for Chandler, Arizona, appeared to be feeling the heat when Breifogel spoke to him. What followed was quite touching. “I’m so proud of you. The coach continued with a biblical reference, “Remember Zacchaeus in the Bible? He was able to do that because someone planted that tree 30 or 40 years ago.” He pressed on with a perspective on life beyond baseball. “If you walk through the next five, Jesus is still Lord,” he said, attempting to ease the pitcher’s mind. “Think about what would happen if you struck out the next five guys. Jesus is still Lord. Got it? I love you. Have fun,” he concluded.

Burke had been managing the game well but had already thrown 82 pitches, quite a lot for anyone, let alone a young player. Hawaii took advantage of this, scoring four runs in the first inning. After that, neither team scored again, and Hawaii ultimately won the game 5-2, eliminating Arizona from the tournament.
However, Breifogel’s speech was not without its critics. Some observers expressed disappointment that the coach did not discuss strategy or offer pitching advice. “How about the scouting report?” exclaimed one commentator, suggesting that the coach should have focused on more tactical guidance.
Others pointed out that the coach seemed to use the moment as a chance to shine on television, which led to mixed reactions online.
