Jets achieve exciting comeback to claim first victory of the season against Bengals

Jets Honor Nick Mangold with Dramatic Win

Sunday began on a somber note for the New York Jets, as they mourned the passing of former center Nick Mangold, who lost his battle with kidney disease. However, the team paid tribute to him in the best way possible: by pulling off an incredible comeback victory, marking their first win of the season with a nail-biting 39-38 defeat of the Cincinnati Bengals.

In the fourth quarter alone, the Jets scored 23 points, turning the tide against Joe Flacco and the Bengals. This win brings the Jets’ season record to 1-7, while Cincinnati, fresh off a significant victory against the Pittsburgh Steelers, now sits at 3-5.

I mean, it was a wild game right from the start. The Bengals held a 31-16 lead going into the fourth, but Flacco, who was riding high after his performance against the Steelers, kept the Bengals in scoring positions. Still, Jets quarterback Justin Fields, who had faced a lot of criticism this season, refused to back down, consistently advancing the ball.

Running back Breece Hall, who had an impressive game with 133 yards and two touchdowns, made a stunning 35-yard run, which helped set up a scoring opportunity. Instead of opting for an extra point after scoring, the Jets decided to go for two, with Fields pushing through to narrow the gap.

When the teams were tied at 31-24 in favor of the Bengals, Flacco and Cincinnati responded, moving down the field and ending that drive with a touchdown from Chase Brown, who secured his second of the game.

But the Jets were quick to answer. Hall showcased his ability by evading tacklers during a 27-yard run to claim another touchdown. The Jets executed two successful two-point conversions in rapid succession, putting them ahead 36-32.

Despite the mounting pressure, the Jets’ defense stepped up, with Will McDonald IV making a crucial sack, forcing the Bengals to punt. The Jets capitalized on this momentum and efficiently worked their way down the field, culminating in a touchdown pass from Hall to tight end Mason Taylor.

As the Jets celebrated their lead, the Bengals were not out of the fight. They had three timeouts left, but Flacco struggled to connect with Andre Iosivas on critical downs, ultimately turning the ball over on downs and sealing the Jets’ first win this year.

Looking at the stats, Fields had a solid outing—21 completions on 32 attempts, totaling 244 yards, alongside a touchdown pass and 31 rushing yards. That touchdown was snagged by Tyler Johnson, who made three catches for 64 yards just before halftime. On the flip side, Flacco completed 21 of his 34 attempts for 223 yards and two touchdowns, while Ja’Marr Chase stood out with 12 receptions for 91 yards. Interestingly, Tee Higgins managed just a single catch, but it was a significant 41-yard touchdown for Cincinnati.
