Overview of NFL Week 18: Jets vs. Bills
Key Matchup
The upcoming game between the Jets and the Bills isn’t exactly a highlight, primarily because the Bills are likely to rest their starters.
The Jets have had a rough time lately, having lost their last four games by a staggering 153-46. That point differential is the worst recorded in December in NFL history—quite an achievement, but not the one they were hoping for.
Interesting enough, they’re now the fifth team ever to lose four straight games by 23 points or more. Should they lose again by that margin this week, they’d make history as the first team to drop five consecutive games like that.
It’s a moment for the Jets to really step up, even if they find themselves on the losing end yet again, especially given that the Bills might be fielding Mitch Trubisky and some second-stringers.
“Ultimately, we want to see our players score,” linebacker Jamian Sherwood pointed out. “I want them to take pride in the jersey they wear. Nobody may expect us to win, and that’s fine. It’s about this moment. You never know when you might get another shot, either here or elsewhere. Just give it your all; tomorrow’s never guaranteed.”
Lineup Consistency
The Jets haven’t had the best season, but remarkably, they’re set to finish with the same starting five on the offensive line throughout. That’s quite rare.
This season’s lineup—Olu Fashanu, John Simpson, Josh Myers, Joe Tippman, and Armando Menbou—hasn’t changed. They’re the only team in the league to maintain such consistency this year. Even though they lost Aliyah Bella-Tucker to injury before the season started, the others have stayed healthy.
“It’s uncommon to see five players develop their game week after week without drop-offs,” said coach Aaron Glenn. “Credit goes to them for managing their health and knowing what it takes to compete consistently. It’s been a valuable experience for us.”
Draft Positioning
For the Jets, the upcoming draft is imperative. They could end up anywhere from the 2nd to the 7th pick, depending on the outcomes this week.
With each loss, their draft stock rises, and honestly, a victory seems unlikely in this matchup. They’ll also have their eyes on the Giants-Cowboys game; if the Giants win, the Jets could jump to second place with just one loss on their record.
Even if the Raiders manage to beat the Chiefs, they won’t snag that top draft pick.
Brady Cook’s Opportunity
This could be Brady Cook’s final chance to prove he should remain a part of the team’s future. His performances have been shaky, with three starts and one relief appearance resulting in just one touchdown but seven interceptions.
There are significant decisions looming about the quarterbacks, raising the question of whether they’ll keep Cook as the third-string player next year.
“Gaining this experience is crucial for him,” said offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand. “He wasn’t exactly slated to be a starter, and suddenly he is. Those reps are invaluable for him, getting to play in important moments this year.”
A Unique Record?
The Jets are staring down a possibility of making history for all the wrong reasons. They have one last shot to intercept a pass this season—or else they’ll be the first team to finish a season without a pick.
It’s been a tough year; opponents have thrown 486 passes, and shockingly, not a single one has been intercepted.
With a secondary made up of backups, one wonders if they can break this unusual streak. Will Mitch Trubisky outmanoeuvre them again?
Final Thoughts
Only four quarters remain in what has been a pretty dismal season.
It wouldn’t be out of character for the Jets to unexpectedly win and consequently ruin their draft positioning, but I don’t foresee that happening. The Bills’ backups seem more capable than the Jets’ current defense. I doubt it will be as embarrassing as prior games, but I can still see the Jets finishing at 3-14.
Final score prediction: Bills 24, Jets 12.
