The New York Jets needed to fill a hole on the defensive line with the departure of edge rusher Bryce Huff.

And the team appeared to address the pass rush hole by completing a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles, the team with which Huff signed a three-year contract in mid-March. The Eagles reportedly traded Redick to the Jets on Friday.

The Jets sent a conditional 2026 third-round draft pick to the Eagles in exchange for Redick. Sources told ESPN that Philadelphia’s reward could be a second-round pick if Redick meets certain minutes and records at least 10 sacks.

Redick, 29, finished the 2023 season with 11 sacks in 17 games. Huff had a team-leading 10 sacks for New York last year.

Redick’s 50-and-a-half sacks over the past four seasons are fourth-most in the NFL.

Redick is in the final year of his current contract, but his agent is expected to negotiate a new long-term deal with the Jets before the start of the 2024 season.

This latest move by the Jets shows the team is looking to strengthen its roster ahead of quarterback Aaron Rodgers’ second season.

The Jets also added eight-time All-Pro offensive lineman Tyron Smith and veteran offensive tackle Morgan Moses to the roster this offseason as part of the team’s “win now” approach. Former Chargers receiver Mike Williams hopes to catch passes from Rodgers once the season starts.

“The more the merrier,” Jets coach Robert Saleh said at the league’s annual meeting in Florida earlier this week. Saleh also expressed excitement about Redick’s versatility.

“He’s definitely found new life on that front. He’s dynamic. He’s versatile. They can do a lot of different things with him, but he’s a three-way rusher. He’s inside. He can win. He can win on the outside. He can’ run through you. ”

Redick failed to record a sack in the final five games of last season, and his departure was largely due to a change in defensive philosophy late in the season. Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni stripped Sean Desai of his defensive play-calling duties in mid-December.

Play-calling duties were taken over by Matt Patricia, who introduced a new scheme.
