The Jets were able to come away with a win on Sunday, but the postgame atmosphere wasn’t entirely celebratory.
The Jets are aware that they didn’t play well offensively in their 13-10 overtime win over the Giants.
One big problem remains with third-down execution.
The Jets were unable to convert their first 12 third-down attempts.
Their first conversion came on a scramble by Zach Wilson for a 17-yard gain with 2:19 left in the fourth quarter.
They finished the game 2-of-15 on third down.
The Jets entered Sunday’s game as the NFL’s worst team on third down.
Sunday’s performance certainly kept them there.
“That’s not good. We’re not going to sugarcoat it,” Jets coach Robert Saleh said. “There’s a lack of execution from a player standpoint. Can we be better as play-callers? Obviously, there’s always something we can do better. It’s a universal thing. It’s not one thing. It’s not the quarterback. It’s not the O-line. It’s not the receiver. It’s not the tight end or the running back or the play caller. We all understand that because everyone in turn isn’t very good at third-down football. There is a need to.”
The Jets seem to be wondering why they’re having trouble on third down.
“I wish I had an answer,” tight end Tyler Conklin said. “Whatever it is, we need to understand it thoroughly. I don’t think we got a first down until Zack scrambled for a first down. I don’t have an answer, but it’s a problem we have to solve. . Today was tough. In a game like today, you have to be able to run the ball a little bit. We couldn’t run the ball well, and we were in a tough situation where we fell behind due to the weather. Why are we playing third down at the moment? I really don’t have an answer as to why we’re having such a hard time with this.”
The Jets were assessed nine penalties in the game, including four personal fouls.
Jermaine Johnson’s drive led to a big shot that ended in a Giants touchdown at the start of the third quarter.
The Jets stopped Giants quarterback Tommy DeVito on third-and-goal starting in the 10th inning, but Johnson hit DeVito too late and was flagged for unnecessary rough play.
“J.J. 1-on-3 down, Jermaine Johnson, that’s unacceptable,” Saleh said. “Okay. Our players love to play hard, play fast, play violently. We usually know where to draw the line. We weren’t clean enough today. ”
