The Jets were called for 16 penalties in Sunday's 40-14 loss to the Bills, and currently lead the NFL in penalties allowed with 131.
However, Jets linebacker Jamian Sherwood said the Jets have not been given the benefit of the doubt and it has led to bad decisions from officials.
“That's just one of the downsides of being with the Jets,” Sherwood said. “You know, the referees are never going to be on our side, so it's like not giving them a chance to throw the flag or whatever.Again, you have to be smart and It also means doing your best when your best is required.”
Sherwood noted that being an NFL official is not a full-time job and said that affects their ability to make calls.
“At the end of the day, referees don't referee Monday through Sunday,” Sherwood said. “You know, they only referee on Sunday all week. You know, they probably have other jobs. So, again, it depends on what they call it. You can't.
The Jets were called for five personal fouls in Sunday's loss.
Sherwood said he disagreed with some of those demands and some of the pass interference penalties.
“This season, things aren’t going as well as Cole wants,” he said. “Again, you can't rely on referees to make the best calls, you know what I'm saying? They can only see so far. And if they actually What you see is something you only see once a week. I feel like you're not learning it every week. Again, it's about being smart in the moment.”
After Sunday's loss to the Bills, Jets cornerback Sauce Gardner raised eyebrows when he said, “Some guys might get checked out.”
On Monday, interim coach Jeff Ulbrich said he disagreed with Gardner.
“At all three stages, I think it's a great opportunity to really look at the tape and really assess a guy's character in moments like this, but the truth is, I just couldn't do that. “I can't find it,'' Ulbrich said. “I couldn't find any lack of effort or tension. We just couldn't do it at all. Was it lack of execution? Absolutely. Did we miss an opportunity and the standards of this organization?” Were we not able to play along? Absolutely not, as far as effort, tension and finish, I felt it was still there.”
The Jets' locker room was filled with frustration after the game, with multiple players saying they were embarrassed by the loss to the Bills.
Ulbrich said he understands why the players felt that way.
“It's very frustrating,” Ulbrich said. “They're a rival and we're enjoying this opportunity to compete against the best teams. In the past we've played a lot better than them, and to go out there and get the results we had. That's a really great thing.'' It's frustrating, it's frustrating, and there's definitely an element of conflict with some people, and I can't say it's right, but I understand that. ”
Ulbrich was asked to evaluate edge rusher Haason Reddick, who had a half-sack and 11 tackles in nine games with the Jets.
Ulbrich said he would admit he wished Redick could have done more, but praised Redick's selflessness through the first seven games of the season.

“One thing I can say with 100 percent certainty about Haason is that it's been a great honor to coach him and be around him, and this guy is willing to do whatever it takes.'' He's one of the most selfish players I've ever played with.” “And when you get a player of his caliber, you never know what you're going to get. They can be selfish in a way, but this guy doesn't have that. He has also done a great job with our young players, helping them progress and grow, so Haason is a great addition to our team, even if he is not as productive. He's made a huge contribution to the defense.”
Coach Ulbrich said rookie WR Malachi Coley injured his elbow in Sunday's game.
The Jets claimed DT Fidarian Mathis off waivers. Mathis is a 2022 second-round pick out of the University of Alabama. …The Jets also claimed LB Jamin Davis off waivers from the Vikings. They released K Anders Karlsson and placed S Chuck Clark on injured reserve to free up a roster spot.
