Davante Adams is gone. Allen Lazard will then exit the door. Tyler Conklin may be after him.
For a while, forget to search for alternatives to Aaron Rodgers as Jets franchise quarterback. Who will catch the exact pass from Tyrod Taylor (or someone else) this season?
The Jets released Adams on Tuesday with a salary cap saving of $29.8 million against a $8.3 million dead cap fee.
It was a promising move from last month's moment that ended the Rogers era.
Adams forced his way from the Raiders to the Jets in a desperate midseason trade in the upcoming draft, due to the opportunity to reunite with Rodgers.
The 11-game rental produced statistics – 67 catches for 854 yards and seven touchdowns – but the season-variance victory towards a 5-12 finish was not enough.
But Adams' departure is just the beginning of the Jets' Flux pass catcher.
Looking at other notable circumstances, it emphasizes the need to be proactive in a free agency, highlighting the early stages of the draft (Tyler Warren or recipient Tetairoa McMillan?).
WR Garrett Wilson
After starting his career with three consecutive 1,000-yard seasons, Wilson is eligible for expansion, and there is no obvious place to slot his contract in the NFL receiver tier. The loss was obvious, and he didn't shut down all speculation that this new administration might seek trade before it was hired.
WR Allen Lazard
The salary cap victim ($6.6 million saved on $6.6 million deaths) joins his Packersroot friends Rodgers and Adams in free agency. Lazard struggled in 2023 and lost his favor. The only season of his career was spent at a quarterback other than Rodgers. The NFL Network reported that jets are open to trading Lazard, which seems like an overblown wish.
WR Malachikory
The 2024 third-round draft pick, approved by Rodgers, was to bring a physical, tackle-destructive catch-and-run element to the offense, so he managed three catches for 16 yards in nine games as a rookie.
WR Xavier Gipson
If Lazard is gone, Gipson will be the second-most back-receiver of the team to play the second offensive snap last season (182 years old, fifth on the team). He recorded six catches for 39 yards. This is when it appeared in 2023 as a punt returner (a walk-off TD for the first week) like a viable option from the slot.
Te Tyler Conklin
He proved to be a smart, mid-level free agent with averaging 58 catches for 551 yards and a total of seven touchdowns in three seasons. The tight end returns to a free agency that will enter his 30-year-old season. What is the price of his respected locker room voice?
Te Jeremy Ruckert
He didn't show much during his first three years, but another three round pick. The Long Island native has just 35 catches for 264 yards (and no touchdowns) in 41 games that enter the year of his contract walk.
Note: Tight ends Zach Kunz and Neil Johnson, and receivers Azop Winston and Brandon Smith have been signed to low-risk futures contracts. Receiver/Special Team Irvin Charles, receiver Malik Taylor and tight end Kenny Yeboah are free agents.
