Jets coach Aaron Glenn makes a daring statement regarding Geno Smith's second chance

Geno Smith Returns to the Jets with High Hopes

Geno Smith, fresh off a challenging season with the Raiders, is reportedly set to take the reins for the New York Jets once again. This reunion, while mostly viewed as a temporary fix to the Jets’ quarterback conundrum, has sparked some optimism, particularly from head coach Aaron Glenn, who believes Smith could potentially lead the team out of its playoff drought.

At the recent NFL meetings in Arizona, Glenn confidently stated, “I feel like he’s the guy that’s going to lead us to the promised land.” It’s a bold claim, especially considering the Jets only secured three wins last season and haven’t seen playoff action since 2010. Last season, Smith faced challenges in Las Vegas, finishing with 17 interceptions.

Interestingly, before his time with the Raiders, Smith had a standout season with the Seattle Seahawks, notching his second consecutive Pro Bowl selection in 2023. However, following a disappointing finish in 2024, he found himself in a trade to the Raiders.

Glenn acknowledged the ups and downs of Smith’s journey, saying, “Listen, I know he was conflicted. I think a lot of quarterbacks struggle at times.” There’s a recognition that while Smith has faced criticism, he also has the potential to improve. “I don’t want to get too deep into it, but there are aspects I believe he can fix,” Glenn noted, hinting at areas where Smith could elevate his game.

As the Jets look toward the 2027 NFL Draft, there’s a buzz about the quarterback class. Yet, Glenn emphasized his confidence in Smith, suggesting he’s an ideal fit for the team’s offensive strategy. “I think he’s going to do some damage because of his arm talent,” Glenn remarked. “And he’s grown so much in terms of his understanding of the game.” It certainly seems that Glenn is optimistic about Smith’s growth and contributions moving forward.

The Jets, reflecting on Smith’s past, made the decision to trade for him, concluding that his history wouldn’t negatively impact the organization. Glenn described Smith’s return as a “full circle moment,” and fans will undoubtedly be watching closely as this chapter unfolds.
