Jets don’t have much clarity on questionable snap infraction call

The Jets are still trying to figure out what exactly happened in the one penalty called against them last week.

Early in the second quarter, the Jaguars went 4-4 for 39 points and felt like they had momentum.

Quarterback Aaron Rodgers appeared to draw the Jaguars offside with his rhythm, but officials ruled that center Joe Tippman committed a “snap violation” and was called a false start.

Instead of going for it on fourth-and-four, the Jets punted on fourth-and-9.

Tippmann asked the referee what he did wrong, and he still seemed confused about it this week.

“He didn't.” [have an explanation]'' Tippman said. “When I approached and asked, he just said, 'Snapping violation.'” I don't know. I think it has something to do with the movement of my hips. ”

Tippman looked at Rodgers from between his legs during the play, then looked up, then looked at Rodgers again before looking back up again before the snap.

Officials may have felt Tippman was moving his head and body to draw the Jaguars offside, but the movement looked typical.

“That's the first thing they told me before.” [move] must be the same as the second [move]'' Tippman said. “I think I did a pretty good job of that. They got me. There's not much I can do about it. After that, I think you could see I came up pretty slowly.”

Tippman's snaps were a hot topic of conversation during training camp when he struggled, but the second-year Jet is having a good season.

“He's just taking the next step,” interim coach Jeff Ulbrich said. “It's tough for a young player, especially at that position. It's like middle linebacker and quarterback, there are some positions that have a high degree of mental processing and problem solving, and center is definitely one of them. Especially when the player behind you is number 8 and he has protection and a database of protection.

“I mean, as good as he is, he has to be as good as he is, so obviously it was a learning process and a lot of growth, but I feel like he came into his own in the second half of the season. There's no doubt he has a great future ahead of him.”

The Jets promoted DT Bruce Hector and S Jarius Monroe from the practice squad for Sunday's game. DT Leki Fotu was downgraded to out and remains on IR.
