Jets Acquire Harrison Phillips
Jets coach Aaron Glenn expressed enthusiasm about bringing defensive tackle Harrison Phillips on board from the Vikings this week.
“First off, he’s one of us,” Glenn noted after the team’s preseason loss to the Eagles. “He speaks to his mentality and character. He’s solid both on and off the field. I remember facing him every year when I was in Detroit. Honestly, when he hit free agency, we were preparing to make a push for him, but, well, he ended up signing with Minnesota.”
The Jets traded two sixth-round picks to acquire Phillips, along with another pick from the Vikings.
Addressing a clear issue in their run defense, the Jets sought to remedy it not just with Phillips, but also through a deal with the Browns for defensive tackle Jawon Briggs.
“I think [GM Darren Mougey] has done a fantastic job identifying guys who fit our system,” Glenn stated. “We’re always searching for the right players who align with our vision. These two really strengthen our lineup.”
When asked if roster spots could still be claimed in the final preseason game, Glenn mentioned undrafted rookie Jamal Pritchett had not been considered for that opportunity.
Pritchett had four receptions for 54 yards and a notable 41-yard punt return in the recent game.
“It’s always interesting to see who stands out in those final preseason moments,” Glenn observed. “Pritchett, I mean, I wouldn’t say he’s a cornerstone yet, but he’s certainly making himself seen. We’re definitely looking to see how he fits in.”
On Saturday, the Jets began reducing their roster to 53 players, releasing six individuals: CB Mario Goodrich, OT Samuel Jackson, TE Neil Johnson, WR Demare Miller, DT Fattlemus Malva, and WR Ontaria Wilson.
