If Aaron Rodgers does not run for vice president, it looks like he will have a strong offensive line in front of him.

The New York Jets are reportedly preparing to make a big splash by signing eight-time Pro Bowl offensive lineman Tyron Smith, 33.

The longtime Dallas Cowboy was named second-team All-Pro last season.

Earlier this week, the Jets acquired Morgan Moses to strengthen their offensive line. Smith will now guard Rodgers’ blind side alongside Moses and Aliyah Berra-Tucker.

Smith made the Pro Bowl in each season from 2013 to 2019 and 2021, and lived up to the hype by being the No. 9 overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft.

The Jets acquired Rodgers last year with the goal of making the playoffs for the first time since 2010.

However, Rodgers tore his Achilles tendon on the fourth snap of the season, ending the Jets’ playoff hopes.

Despite a lot of drama surrounding the Jets, especially with Rodgers, the four-time MVP appears to be healthy at the beginning of the season. He was close to returning in 2023, and if the Jets were in playoff contention, he probably would have.

SNY said general manager Joe Douglas “swooped in” after Smith’s market “didn’t consolidate as expected.”

The reported signing of Smith will open up a number of options for the Jets’ No. 10 draft pick. They desperately need a No. 2 receiver behind Garrett Wilson, but Marvin Harrison, Roman Odunze and Malik Nabors could all be available. I was gone by then.

But Douglas isn’t afraid to make trades, having previously acquired Vera Tucker and Breece Hall.

The problem for New York is offensively. The Jets’ defense was solid here as well. However, after Rodgers’ injury, Zach Wilson struggled again.

So it makes sense that the Jets would want to protect their quarterback with a better offensive line.
