Jets GM Darren Mougey feels more aligned with Aaron Glenn in his second year

Jets GM Discusses Training Camp Insights

On Wednesday, Jets general manager Darren Mousey addressed the media as training camp kicked off, sharing thoughts on a variety of topics.

One subject that came up was how Aaron Glenn has evolved in his second year. Mousey, also in his second season with the Jets, mentioned that having spent a year in the organization has been beneficial.

“In the second year, the comfort level increases even more,” Mousey remarked. He noted that his relationship with Glenn has become stronger through daily interactions. “We’re more in sync. The time you have to work with everyone helps with that. I think we all have high expectations for ourselves—including the players, coaches, and me.”

When questioned about his definition of a successful season, Mousey was straightforward.

“We want to win,” he stated. “I want to see them compete and grow every day. That starts today through training camp and continues throughout the season.”

This offseason, Mousey has secured contract extensions for running back Breece Hall and guard Joe Tippman, though he didn’t indicate plans for extending other players.

“I think we’re in a good place right now, but we’ll always keep contract talks in-house,” he added thoughtfully.

There’s also potential for the Jets to add a veteran backup quarterback before the season begins, whether via trade or by signing someone. Mousey expressed enthusiasm about seeing Cade Klubnik, Bailey Zappe, and Brady Cook compete to back up Geno Smith.

“I’m not going to get into hypotheticals,” he cautioned. “I’m really looking forward to seeing Cade get those reps during training camp. We’ll keep an eye on things for the entire group, including Geno. It’s important for their growth.”

Neither Mousey nor Glenn wanted to delve into Smith’s recent issues with Florida police. Instead, Mousey focused on the positive, saying, “I’m excited about what’s ahead. We’re on track and eager to keep progressing through this offseason and training camp.”

Glenn acknowledged that Smith has taken accountability for his actions. “I think he’s done a really good job on the awareness part,” he noted, adding that distractions had arisen during OTAs but they are now behind them. “He talked to me. He talked to some of his teammates. We’re 100 percent with him and moving forward.”

In terms of player health, rookie cornerback D’Angelo Pons did not practice due to a calf strain, but Glenn expressed optimism about his condition. Furthermore, defensive tackle Maji Smith completed practice despite a hamstring issue, while NT Tuvondre Sweat is on the non-football injury list with a hamstring injury that Glenn believes isn’t a long-term concern.
