Justin Fields Injured During Training Camp
New York Jets quarterback Justin Fields was carted off the field during practice on Thursday due to a noticeable injury to his lower leg.
The 26-year-old Fields stepped in for Aaron Rodgers after signing a two-year, $40 million contract in the offseason. As he was being carted away, he took off his cleat from his right foot.
Last season, Fields played in 10 games with the Pittsburgh Steelers, starting six of them. The team recorded a 4-2 record during his starts, with him completing 65.8% of his passes for a total of 1,106 yards, five touchdowns, and only one interception.
Additionally, Fields contributed to the rushing game, recording 189 yards and five touchdowns from 62 carries. Despite his efforts, he was benched in favor of Russell Wilson after six games.
After releasing Rodgers—who had two less than stellar seasons—the Jets brought in Fields to be their starting quarterback. Garrett Wilson, the team’s standout wide receiver, even played alongside Fields at Ohio State.
If Fields needs to sit out for a substantial time, the Jets have Tyrod Taylor, Adrian Martinez, and Brady Cook on their roster as backup options. Taylor, who seems like a solid choice, has been in the NFL for 14 years, starting 58 games and sporting a career record of 28-28-1. He completed 17 out of 22 passes for 119 yards and three touchdowns in two games with the Jets last season.
In 2023, Taylor started five games for the New York Giants, finishing with a 2-3 record, completing 64.4% of his passes for 1,341 yards along with five touchdowns and three interceptions.
