Jets land first Mike Vrabel interview as head coaching search picks up

One of the hottest head coaching candidates is scheduled to meet with the Jets on Friday.

The team is meeting with former Titans coach Mike Vrabel, officials confirmed.

Vrabel is considered one of the top candidates for this coaching cycle after being fired by the Titans last year.

Vrabel, 49, reached the playoffs three times with Tennessee and posted a 54-45 regular season record. He was named the 2021 Coach of the Year.

Tennessee fired Vrabel after two consecutive losing seasons. Vrabel served in a consulting role with the Browns this season. His contract with Cleveland expires on Monday, allowing him to interview with teams early. People working for NFL teams can't interview until the regular season ends on Sunday.

This is the second known interview with the Jets for the head coaching position. They interviewed former Commanders and Panthers coach Ron Rivera on Thursday.

The Jets fired manager Robert Saleh in October after just five games.

Vrabel is expected to be a candidate for every opening day in the NFL. The interview with the Jets is the first known he has received.

Currently, the Jets, Saints, and Bears have openings. There are also rumors that Vrabel could be moved to the Raiders if they decide to move Antonio Pierce. Tom Brady, Vrabel's former teammate with the Patriots, is a minority owner in Las Vegas.

Vrabel had a 14-year playing career, including eight years with the Patriots.

There has also been speculation that New England may try to hire Vrabel if they fire Jerod Mayo after one season.
