Jets lose heartbreaker vs. Colts to bury playoff hopes for good

Give the young man one point.

In a matchup between 22-year-old Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson and 40-year-old Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers, Richardson and the Colts won.

Richardson scored his second 4-yard rushing touchdown of the game with 46 seconds left, giving the Colts a 28-27 victory.

With this loss, the Jets fell to 3 wins and 8 losses, ending their slim playoff hopes.

The Colts improved to 5-6.

It's the Jets' seventh loss in their last eight games.

Richardson's touchdown came after a six-play, 70-yard drive that followed a Jets field goal, giving the Jets a five-point lead and looking like a victory.

Rodgers threw two touchdown passes after failing to get a first down on the Jets' first five possessions. Breece Hall scored rushing and receiving touchdowns, and new kicker Anders Karlsson made two field goals, but the Jets' defense collapsed with two minutes remaining.

Carlson's second field goal came from 35 yards out with 2:41 left in the game, giving the Jets a five-point lead.

It happened after Richardson led an eight-play, 70-yard drive that ended with a 10-yard touchdown pass to Josh Downs.

Richardson missed a two-point conversion attempt, and the Colts trailed 24-22 with 10 minutes, 11 seconds left.

The Jets defense had to come up with one more stop after Karlsson's field goal.

Richardson completed a 39-yard pass along the sideline to a wide-open Alec Pierce, putting the Colts ahead at the Jets' 27.

He then hit Downs for a 17-yard gain to the 10.

Richardson then scored from the 4-yard line and ran over DJ Reed for the win.

The Jets are off to a terrible start.

They failed to get a first down on their first five possessions, the first time that has happened since 2005.

Until the final possession of the first half, the offense looked completely out of sync.

Hall got the Jets' first first down of the day on a 6-yard run just after the two-minute warning.

That sparked the Jets' first proper drive of the day.

The Jets were moving the ball as Rodgers connected with Davante Adams for a 24-yard gain.

The Jets hit the scoreboard when Rodgers extended a third-down play from the Colts' 29 and dropped the ball to Hall on a short pass, which led to a touchdown and the Jets cut the Colts' lead to 13-7. It was published in On to halftime.

With this play, Rodgers passed Dan Marino for eighth place on the NFL's all-time passing yards list.

The Colts started the second half with the ball, and Richardson turned it over on the second play.

Jets linebacker Jamian Sherwood sacked Richardson and knocked the ball away.

Jets defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw recovered the ball at the Colts' 25.

Moments later, Hall scored his second touchdown of the day, running through the Colts' defense for an 18-yard touchdown to give the Jets a 14-13 lead.

Both teams then traded long field goals, and Colts kicker Matt Gay made a 56-yard field goal to give Indianapolis a 16-14 lead.

Carlson, starting his first game for the Jets, made a 58-yard field goal with 2:55 left in the third quarter to give the Jets a 17-16 lead.

Karlsson becomes the Jets' fourth kicker in the last four weeks after the Chiefs removed Spencer Shrader from their practice squad on Thursday.

The Jets extended their lead to 24-16 with 13:03 left in the game on an 11-yard touchdown pass from Rodgers to tight end Kenny Yeboah.

The Colts jumped out to a 13-0 lead early in the game as the Jets stumbled on offense.

The Jets failed to get a first down on their first five possessions as Rodgers appeared to struggle completing passes.

The Jets gained just 9 yards on nine plays in the first quarter.

The Colts weren't explosive, but on their first possession they hit a 31-yard pass from Richardson to Josh Downs, and Jonathan Taylor gained yards on the ground.

Richardson eluded Jets defensive end Michael Clemons and ran past Jets safety Jalen Mills at the goal line for a 2-yard touchdown early in the second quarter.

The touchdown was sandwiched between two Gay field goals, giving the Colts a two-point lead at 13-0.
