Jets’ Malachi Corley has fool-proof plan to make up from goal-line blunder

Malachi Coley has a plan for what he'll do with the football once he gets to the end zone again.

“I’m probably going to hold the ball all the way to the sideline and give it to the coach.” [Ulbrich] And tell him I owe him that,” the Jets rookie receiver said Wednesday.

Corey was on the brink of scoring his first career touchdown last Thursday against the Texans, but he dropped the ball too soon during the celebration.

Although it had not yet crossed the goal line when Corey dropped the football, the ball rolled through the end zone and out of bounds, giving the ball to the Texans. The play quickly added to the Jets' list of embarrassing moments of failure, but Corey said he wasn't embarrassed.

“It's not a defining moment for me,” Corey said. “Imagine if I broke three tackles, juked my opponent, and then dropped the ball 1 yard from the end zone. You still made the same play, but 1 yard more. There's no coaching point in keeping the ball. If they give me the ball again, I'll do the same thing over and over again.”

Corey may get another chance soon.

The Jets traded Mike Williams to the Steelers on Tuesday, clearing the way for Corey to play more.

“I think he responded well,” interim coach Jeff Ulbrich said of Corey's accident. “He went out there and played physical, violent football. We're going to especially rely on him like that. [Allen] lazard [being injured] And Mike is gone. He will take on more reps and be part of a receiving corps that is there to block at times. ”

The Jets have a strong guard. Starting pitchers Aliyah Vera-Tucker (ankle) and John Simpson (groin) were absent from Wednesday's practice. He also did not back up Jake Hanson (hamstring). The Jets may need to start Max Mitchell and rookie Olu Fashanu against the Cardinals on Sunday. Fashanu played guard for the first time in his career last Thursday against the Texans.

Other players who did not practice were RT Morgan Moses (knee), LT Tyron Smith (rest day), DT Solomon Thomas (knee), LB CJ Mosley (neck), and CB Michael Carter (back). LB Chaz Surratt (heel) and S Ashtyn Davis (concussion) were limited.

QB Aaron Rodgers (knee, hamstring) and S Tony Adams (hamstring) participated fully.

Jets wide receiver Garrett Wilson was named the AFC Offensive Player of the Week for his nine receptions, 90 yards and two one-handed touchdowns against the Texans.
