Jets name Aaron Rodgers, three others as their captains

The Jets selected their 2024 captains on Tuesday, choosing the same three players who won a title a year ago and one new veteran.

Two of the team's 2023 captains, Aaron Rodgers and C.J. Mosley, were re-elected as captains in 2024 as expected.

They will be joined by Quinnen Williams and Thomas Morstead, giving the team four captains, one more than last season when Justin Hardy was the special teams captain.

Williams was not originally selected last season but took over the position after Rodgers was sidelined with a ruptured Achilles tendon.

Both Rodgers and Mosley have experience in the role.

In addition to last season, Rodgers has served as captain for the Packers 12 times.

Mosley is a five-time captain with the Jets and has spent every season with New York except for 2020, when he opted out due to pandemic concerns.

Nearly every team that selects a captain does so to improve their quarterback, and it's no secret that the Jets are banking on Rodgers to improve nearly every aspect of their team.

“You want to have a guy like that,” offensive tackle Morgan Moses said. “We're always on the sideline talking about offensive structure, play structure. It helps him see things from his perspective. It raises the IQ of the team because we're all on the same code.”

Morstead, who is in his 16th season in the league and third with the Jets (2021, 2023), was captain of the Saints in 2014 and 2015.

Niners offensive tackle Trent Williams reportedly worked on the sidelines during a practice period open to the media after completing a walkout on Tuesday morning.

Christian McCaffrey practiced for the first time since suffering a calf strain early last month, as did Brandon Aiyuk, who also sat out camp.

There appears to be no movement on Haason Reddick's strike going into game week, with head coach Robert Saleh saying there were no new developments to his knowledge and that he hasn't spoken to Reddick since before training camp.

The Jets held a light practice on Tuesday, which Saleh called a “bonus Monday,” before having Wednesday off and then starting full practice on Thursday.

Veteran tackle Tyron Smith took scheduled rest days during training camp, so Saleh declined to say whether Smith would be limited in practice this week but said the Jets will “continue to be smart” in managing Smith's workload.
