Jets’ Nathaniel Hackett takes accountability for team’s offensive woes: ‘It starts with me’

New York Jets first-year offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett is facing some challenges this season.

The team's star quarterback, Aaron Rodgers, suffered a season-ending injury after just four snaps. Zach Wilson, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2021 draft, has not been able to play consistently and has been plagued by injuries. The Jets also used veteran quarterbacks Tim Boyle and Trevor Siemian at various times during the season.

Gang Green went on to produce one of the worst offenses in the NFL. Hackett is in charge of the team's offense and has acknowledged a lack of consistency across the offense, taking some of the blame for the team's lackluster production.

“Right now I'm getting ready for New England,” Hackett said via the team's website. “I think it's great to evaluate everything. We've had so many changes, some missed chances, some inconsistencies and some self-inflicted harm. So we're looking back at our offense.”

Robert Saleh deflects 2024 question, Zach Wilson's Jets career up in the air: 'We'll see'

New York entered Week 16 with the 30th-ranked offense in scoring. This offense has been widely criticized for putting pressure on the NFL's best defenses.

The Jets haven't qualified for the postseason since the 2010 season. They currently have a 6-10 record and were officially eliminated from the playoffs earlier this season. The team entered the 2023 season with high expectations, but a disappointing season has led to speculation that the team will move on from head coach Robert Saleh this offseason.

But Saleh recently dismissed concerns about his job security.

“No,” Saleh told reporters in December. “There are two types of coaches: those who have been fired and those who are about to be fired. We coach in the moment. We coach to win football games.”

Jets owner Woody Johnson recently indicated that Saleh and general manager Joe Douglas will stay on next season.

Saleh also expressed support for Hackett.

“Obviously, I have a lot of confidence in him,” Saleh said earlier this week. “Look, it's going to be hard for people to realize that, but let's start with the Atlanta game, we saw a lot of improvement through the tape, but I'm not going to go into the stats.

“We had two games where we scored over 30 points. I thought we moved the ball really well against Cleveland.” [on Sunday]had a bad game against Miami. [in Week 15].I felt like the offense really took a step in the right direction against Atlanta. [in Week 13]. I know we didn't get the points, but we had a lot of chances in that game, but I feel like the team got better, especially in the second half of the season. We have a chance to finish on a good note. We'll probably get three of the last five and like I said, I'm feeling better.”

The Jets have allowed 17 offensive touchdowns this season, the fewest in the league. They have also failed to get over the 10-point mark in six of their losses this season.

The Jets conclude the regular season Sunday against their AFC East rival, the New England Patriots.
