Jets Fans Eager to See David Bailey in Preseason Action

Jets fans will get their first glimpse of David Bailey, the No. 2 overall draft pick, during Friday night’s preseason opener against the Buccaneers. Many are anticipating that he’ll make quite an impression.

Bailey has been the standout player of training camp, consistently invading the offensive backfield and giving the Buccaneers a tough time during recent joint practices.

“We know he’s a solid player,” Jets coach Aaron Glenn remarked. “A strong pass rusher, for sure. Sometimes you expect these things, but does it really mean anything? You anticipate him winning a lot of matchups, but he’ll also have moments that require coaching. It’s really a back-and-forth process.”

Interestingly, Glenn mentioned observing a particular play in practice where Bailey didn’t come out on top, and he’s intrigued to coach him through that.

Bailey was chosen second overall by the Jets, passing over Arbel Reese, who went to the Giants at the fifth pick. He has certainly made a positive impact in the early weeks of camp.

Veteran linebacker Demario Davis shared his thoughts, saying, “I’ve encountered many rookies over my 15 years—most seasons I’d meet seven to ten new players. Some don’t meet expectations, while others exceed them.” He added, “Bailey looks like a solid No. 2 pick. He’s showing all the qualities we hoped for, or maybe even more. His instincts not just in rushing the quarterback but in tackling are impressive. He’s quite mature for his age.”

Fans will be excited to see both Bailey and fellow first-round pick Omar Cooper Jr. in action on Friday. However, they’ll miss the chance to see TE Kenyon Saddiq and CB D’Angelo Pons, two notable rookies sidelined by injuries.

Saddiq started training camp strong but has been out for the last two weeks due to complications from sports hernia surgery in May. Glenn is optimistic about his return for Week 1.

On the other hand, Pons has yet to practice this camp due to a calf issue. Glenn has been somewhat dismissive of the concern surrounding Pons’ injury, but if he remains unable to practice, it might raise more significant worries. Pons was anticipated to be the starting nickel cornerback, but that prospect is less likely with each passing day.

In related news, the Jets have waived DE Eric Watts due to an injury settlement.
