Jets Quarterback Fields Reflects on Faith After Humbling Loss
It’s not unusual for athletes to credit Jesus after winning, but it’s a bit rarer to hear such sentiments following a tough loss. Yet, that’s exactly what Justin Fields, quarterback for the New York Jets, did after a disappointing 13-6 defeat against Carolina. In that game, he managed only 46 passing yards, failed to score, and was benched at halftime.
The Jets, sitting at 0-7 this season, have struggled significantly, ranking 29th in the league in yards per game. Fields, who has seen success before in both college and professional football, hasn’t hit his stride in the first couple of months of the 2025 season.
After the game, Fields expressed, “I feel relieved.” He added, “Nothing upsets me. It’s just my relationship with the Lord.”
Fields joined the Jets in the offseason, hoping for a fresh beginning away from a rocky tenure in Chicago and Pittsburgh. Jets head coach Aaron Glenn hasn’t announced who will start against Cincinnati on Sunday, as Fields continues to face challenges and Tyrod Taylor is expected to step in due to a knee injury. Despite the struggles, Fields remains committed to his faith while contemplating the possibility of losing his starting position.
“I’ve always asked God to give me opportunities and places to spread His word, and sometimes things don’t always go as planned,” he stated, highlighting the current difficulty as a chance to share his beliefs. “I think the position I’m in now is a great opportunity to spread that message and let the world know how I feel about God and how great He is.”
“I’ve been through a lot in my career, especially in the NFL and my college days. God has been there through both the highs and lows, and I might be feeling down right now,” he pointed out.
Reflecting on his mindset, Fields noted that the “old me” would have struggled to cope with these challenges in the same manner.
“My faith is rooted in Christ,” he said. “As I told you earlier this week, nothing can break me. And when it comes to my job here, I’m coming to work the same way. I’m going to lead the same way. And again, how great is God? I just want to continue spreading the message that, no matter what I go through in life, I know I’m strong enough to handle it. I know God will help me deal with it.”
Fields enjoyed a remarkable college career with a 20-2 record as a starter at Ohio State, but his transition to the NFL has been much tougher, with a record of 11-29 over three seasons with the Bears, even if he showcased brilliance at times. He made history in 2022 as one of the few quarterbacks to rush for over 1,000 yards in a single season.
Despite the on-field hurdles, Fields seems to view his current challenges through a lens of faith.
