Jets Struggle with Discipline in Loss to Dolphins

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — Ahlong Len aimed to instill more discipline in the Jets this summer. Yet, it appears that hasn’t come to fruition.

In their 27-21 defeat against the Dolphins on Monday, the Jets were flagged for 13 penalties totaling 101 yards. Most of these infractions occurred before the snap or were costly personal fouls, which is what Glenn had vowed to eradicate.

“Before you win a game, it’s essential to learn how to avoid losing it,” Glenn remarked. “We need to do a better job in that regard. And we will.”

The Jets specifically faced six pre-snap penalties on offense, including three false starts and several delays and illegal movements.

During one Dolphins drive in the second half, Source Gardner was penalized for pass interference and unnecessary roughness, which extended Miami’s touchdown drive.

Garrett Wilson talked about a controversial offensive pass interference that negated a touchdown. “I’m not shocked they called it,” he shared. “I recognize the need for improvement. Watching football, these things happen. I’ll make sure it doesn’t occur again.”

Gardner expressed his frustration, feeling that the Jets, being the losing team, are unfairly targeted by penalties. “It’s personally irritating,” he said. “It seems like we’re being scrutinized because we’re not winning. Looking at successful teams, it feels different.”

The Jets were determined to establish a running game, starting strong with 76 yards on their initial drive, showcasing heavy formations. However, it ended with a fumble by Braelon Allen.

They managed to rush for 197 yards overall, the best since their 234-yard game against the Broncos in October 2023.

Unfortunately, Allen exited the game with a knee injury, while cornerback Michael Carter left with a concussion. Glenn was uncertain about the severity of Allen’s injury.

Wide receiver Tyler Johnson was inactive for the first time this season, having recorded four catches for 63 yards across three games. He faced a notable drop after a game against the Buccaneers.

Meanwhile, Josh Reynolds returned from a hamstring injury, adding to the roster dynamics. Other inactives included Edger Maine Johnson (ankle), cornerback Jarvis Brownlee (ankle), kicker Kene Nwangwu (hamstring), offensive tackle Esa Pole, tight end Jelani Woods, and defensive tackle Leonard Taylor.

In a special moment, former Dolphins stars Jason Taylor and Zach Thomas served as honorary captains. Interestingly, Jets rookie tight end Mason Taylor is related to both—he’s Taylor’s son and Thomas’s nephew.
