CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Jets cornerback Brandon Codrington was joined by many friends and family members for Saturday’s preseason win over the Panthers.
He put on a show for them, and the Jets decision makers.
Codrington opened the second half with a 63-yard kickoff return and then a 31-yard punt return to highlight his chances of qualifying for the roster.
Codrington is unlikely to make the active roster, but could very well be a candidate for the practice squad.
“[He] “He definitely took advantage of his opportunities,” Jets coach Robert Saleh said. “I thought he was the best player on both ends of the floor. He started a couple of scoring drives, that’s what he’s here for. We brought him in for his punt return and kick return ability, and I thought he did a really good job tonight.”
Codrington grew up in Raleigh, North Carolina, and attended North Carolina Central University.
The Jets signed him as an undrafted free agent in May after rookie minicamp.
Codrington’s path to making the roster will be as a returner.
“I try to make the most of my opportunities,” he said, “and every time I step on the field, I try my best to make sure I have no regrets. Even if I fail, I try to fly around.”
Codrington said he thought he could score on both returns.
“I really think so,” he said. “Every time I get the ball, I try to get one back every time.”
Corner back Jarick Bernard-Converse, who had a strong training camp, left the game in the second quarter with a groin injury and did not return.
Saleh said Bernard Converse will be nursing an injury for a few days.
WR Irv Charles left the game in the second quarter with a hip injury.
Charles nearly blocked a punt early in the game.
The Jets rested not only starting quarterback Aaron Rodgers, but also backup Tyrod Taylor.
Rookies Andrew Peaslee and Adrian Martinez played, with Peaslee playing the first half and Martinez the second half.
“I wanted to get a good look [Peasley] “It’s Martinez,” Saleh said. “We’ll change the rotation next week depending on who goes first. We just wanted to get a good look at the two rookies.”
Neither quarterback had much of a chance in the game.
Peaslee completed 7 of 11 passes for 33 yards and Martinez completed 7 of 17 passes for 67 yards and one interception.
