Jets secure their first victory over the Bengals shortly after the passing of Nick Mangold

CINCINNATI — A Surprising Turn of Events

Who would have predicted this?

On a day when the Jets said goodbye to one of their all-time greats, Nick Mangold, the thrilling 39-38 comeback victory against the Bengals at Peiko Stadium almost felt overshadowed. I mean, how can you celebrate when you just lost a franchise icon? Mangold, a phenomenal center who played from 2006 to 2016, passed away at just 41 due to a rare genetic kidney disease, and the announcement came shortly before kickoff.

Despite losing seven games in a row, the Jets finally managed to secure their first win of the season. It was especially significant since it marked Aaron Glenn’s debut victory as an NFL head coach.

The Jets, despite their injuries—missing key players like their top cornerback Sauce Gardner and both starting receivers, Garrett Wilson and Josh Reynolds—faced a formidable Bengals squad led by 40-year-old quarterback Joe Flacco, a former Jet.

Flacco was targeting top receivers Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins, who are considered one of the best duos in the league. Chase entered this game as the NFL receiving leader, having posted 16 catches for 161 yards and a touchdown in the previous game against the Steelers.

Throughout the game, it felt like the odds were stacked against the Jets. Chase and Higgins were covered by rookie corners Azari Thomas and Brandon Stevens, both making their first NFL starts. Offensively, the Jets had struggled, failing to score a touchdown in their previous two games. Yet on that Sunday, they flipped the script and delivered their best offensive showing of the season, amassing 503 yards.

Quarterback Justin Fields, who had faced some harsh treatment from team owner Woody Johnson earlier in the week, shone with one of his finest performances, completing 21 of 32 passes for 244 yards and a touchdown.

The running game was electric, with Breece Hall rushing for 133 yards and two touchdowns, including a clutch two-point conversion pass to rookie tight end Mason Taylor with 1:54 remaining. Fields also broke the team’s touchdown drought with a 15-yard scoring pass to Tyler Johnson on a fourth-and-2 play, bringing the score to 17-10 in the first half.

However, true to Jets fashion, as the offense finally began to click, the defense faltered again, allowing 24 points in the first half, leaving them trailing 24-13 by halftime.

In the third quarter, the Jets narrowed the gap to 24-16 with Nick Folk’s fourth field goal. Inspired by a 50-yard run from running back Isaiah Davis, they were showing signs of life. But then, the Bengals quickly responded, extending their lead with Samaje Perine’s second touchdown run, making it 31-16.

Undeterred, the Jets fought back, closing the lead to 31-24 thanks to Hall’s five-yard touchdown run and subsequent two-point conversion, marking his first touchdown of the season. Yet defensively, the Jets couldn’t hold the line, and the Bengals surged to a 38-24 advantage on another touchdown from Chase Brown.

Still, the Jets were relentless, cutting the lead to 38-31 with a 27-yard touchdown run followed by a two-point conversion with just under eight minutes left in the game.
