Jets sign Sauce Gardner to a record $120.4 million deal

Gardner’s Big Payday with the Jets

The New York Jets have secured a significant contract with Sauce Gardner, finalizing a four-year extension worth $120.4 million, which positions him as the NFL’s highest-paid cornerback.

This marks the second substantial financial move by Jets owner Woody Johnson in just a few days, reinforcing key players for the franchise. Overall, with this deal and the protection of receivers like Garrett Wilson, the Jets have invested more than $250 million in their top draft picks from 2022, ensuring their futures through the 2030 season.

Gardner announced the news on social media, stating, “The transaction will be made.”

Interestingly, Gardner’s new contract edges out the previous record held by Derek Stingley Jr. of the Texans, who signed a deal worth $30 million per year after being drafted one pick before Gardner.

Currently, Gardner and Wilson stand out among cornerbacks, with only Jaycee Horn of the Panthers, earning $25 million a year, trailing behind them.

Although some critics point to Gardner’s lack of takeaways—three interceptions and one forced fumble in his first 48 games—his reputation as a tough cornerback is undeniable. Over three seasons, he has been selected to two Pro Bowls and named a first-team All-Pro twice.

Jets fans might recall the tension from the past, thinking of players like John Abraham, Darrelle Revis, and Jamal Adams whose negotiations often didn’t end well. But there’s a sense of optimism now, as General Manager Darren Moogie has secured these significant deals ahead of training camp, signaling a potentially brighter future for the team.
