Stirrings in Jets’ Quarterback Situation

The Week 8 decision around the New York Jets wasn’t entirely voluntary. Just days after Jets owner Woody Johnson expressed his dissatisfaction with quarterback Justin Fields, head coach Aaron Glenn was vague about who would start, citing a “competitive advantage.”

Fields, who recently signed that two-year, $40 million contract, hasn’t had the best run with the Jets. In fact, during Week 7 against the Panthers, he was benched at halftime for veteran Tyrod Taylor.

But here’s the twist: Taylor got hurt during that game and won’t be playing against the Bengals this Sunday, which means Fields is back in as the starter.

Johnson vented his frustrations at an NFL owners meeting, saying it’s challenging to have a quarterback performing at Fields’ current level. “He has potential, but something’s off,” he noted, emphasizing the need for consistency at that crucial position.

This season, Fields has started six games but missed one due to concussion protocol, ending with a passer rating of 91.1. It seems some Jets staff had high hopes for Taylor, thinking he would be a stronger quarterback option.

As for Glenn, when pressed by the media about naming the starting quarterback, he simply noted he “didn’t want to.” But he mentioned the players were already in the loop about who would lead the team.

To add to the roster situation, key players like Garrett Wilson and Sauce Gardner will also be sitting out against the Bengals as the Jets aim to avoid starting the season 0-8.
