Jewish Community Attacked in 'Terror Incident'

Shooting at Bondi Beach Claims Twelve Lives

Twelve individuals, including one perpetrator, lost their lives during what is believed to be a terrorist attack at Sydney’s Bondi Beach on Sunday night. Reports indicate that at least 11 others were injured, with a second suspect now in custody after the attack specifically targeted the local Jewish community.

The event, titled “Hanukkah-by-the-Sea,” had attracted over 1,000 attendees and was set to kick off at 5 p.m. near a playground when chaos erupted on the famous beach.

New South Wales Premier Chris Minns confirmed the death toll, stating that aside from the attacker killed, another “criminal” has been captured. He emphasized that the assault was aimed at Sydney’s Jewish population.

Premier Minns described the tragedy as shattering a “night of peace and joy” with a “terrible and evil attack.”

The New South Wales Police Commissioner, Mal Lanyon, noted that the gathering was significant, with well over a thousand gathered to celebrate Hanukkah. Among those shot were two police officers, according to ABC News.

In a concerning development, a suspected improvised explosive device (IED) was found shortly after the shooting started and was safely defused by the bomb squad. As events unfolded around 9 PM local time, authorities labeled it a “developing incident” and urged the public to steer clear of the area.

Emergency services treated several victims at the scene before transferring them to hospitals nearby.

In a tragic update, a well-known rabbi has been identified as one of the victims of the shooting. Rabbi Eli Schlanger from Chabad of Bondi was reportedly targeted, having communicated about the event on social media just hours before the attack.

A friend shared their grief, reflecting on the rabbi’s commitment to the community, saying, “He was just doing his job. He showed up. He was always a reliable presence.” The loss is felt deeply, adding layers of confusion and sorrow to an already devastating situation.
